“WATTSTAX: I AM SOMEBODY”
“Wattstax: I Am Somebody” is an exhibit that explores and celebrates the fascinating Wattstax concert produced and hosted by Stax Records in Los Angeles in 1972 and the documentary “Wattstax,” which was released in theaters in 1973. Released on home DVD in 2004 with the original ending that was lost for 30 years and other bonus footage, “Wattstax” is an award-winning film that captures not only incredible footage of the concert, but also life on the streets of Los Angeles for African-Americans during that era. Both the concert and the documentary have been hailed by critics internationally for its wisdom, insight, and entertainment value and for being a historical and cultural treasure.
This exhibit contains some 50 large-format, rare photographs from the concert and the making of the documentary. It also includes items of memorabilia ranging from the original hand-written planning notes from Stax Records to original press releases, concert line-up lists, letters from around the world, and other fascinating items that help tell the incredible story of Wattstax.
