Deanie Parker named 2005 Woman of Character by Girl Scouts
Memphis, TN – Girl Scout Council of the Mid-South selected Deanie Parker, president of Soulsville Foundation, as the 2005 Woman of Character Award recipient. The award, presented December 1, recognizes Parker for her strength, confidence, motivation and leadership, which serve as an inspiration to girls and young women.
“Deanie’s passion is working with young people to help them achieve their full potential,” said Jozelle Booker, who nominated Parker for the award. “She lives her life epitomizing the principles of service and help as found in the Girl Scout Promise, and the character traits of honesty, fairness, caring, and respect as found in the Girl Scout Law.”
Girl Scout Council of the Mid-South President Rosemarie Fair said, “The courage, compassion and leadership Deanie exhibits makes her a great role model. Through her actions, girls can learn to follow their dreams, have conviction for what they believe in and do what they can to make the community a better place for all.”
Parker has received many accolades for the work she has done throughout her career. Before becoming involved in Soulsville and the Stax Academy, Parker was vice-president of communications and marketing at the Regional Medical Center, and assistant and interim director of Memphis in May.
She currently serves on the boards of the Rock n’ Soul Museum, Play It Again Memphis, Memphis Music Commission and the Tennessee Arts Commission. She’s a former Girl Scout Council of the Mid-South board member.
"My life might have been considerably different without the early basic training that the Girl Scouts provided me as a young girl,” said Parker. “I have a little box of treasures from my childhood that I keep accessible. It contains some of my grade school report cards, Sunday School certificates, first library card, my Girl Scout badges and pin, and other items. These treasures have special meaning to me and all have had some impact on the person that I am today, especially my Girl Scout memorabilia. I am deeply honored to be recognized as the Girl Scout Council of the Mid-South’s 2005 Woman of Character."
Previous Woman of Character Award recipients are Rose Flenorl, Rosemarie Fair, Sharon Goldsworthy and Dr. Carol Johnson.
